If, like me, you’re in favour of supporting independent businesses, shopping local and small where possible, then great. But if, also like me, you sometimes shudder at the thought of dragging yourself to the shops, squeezing as much gift collection as possible into limited time slots to avoid hordes of other shoppers as festive preparations ramp up, I might just have the solution for you.
I was lucky enough to join Trouva for a peek at their 2017 Christmas showcase – a collection of beautiful pieces from an array of different indie stores around the UK. In case you aren’t familiar with Trouva, allow me to tell you a little about them.
Trouva is an online marketplace for independent bricks-and-mortar boutiques. Visit their website and you’ll find an excellently-curated range of items from 350 shops in over 119 towns and cities in the UK. Essentially, the company bridges online and offline shopping from local retailers and offers convenient click and collect, 1-hour delivery, and worldwide shipping in a single seamless platform.
I love the way Trouva has created a service on behalf of independent and local shops that competes with the bigger, sleeker retailers able to offer cheap, quick delivery. Shopping independent is especially important during the holidays and makes such a difference to the lives of designers, makers and business owners working hard to create special, considered and creative gifts.
Being able to shop from my favourites from the comfort of home and find everything I need on one site is a bit of a revelation and if that doesn’t convince you to give the site a go, just Google them and take a look at their Christmas gift selection. Spoiler alert: it’s bloody beautiful.
The Trouva team has also made it easier to shop and discover lovely bits and pieces by indie businesses and designer makers by creating curated edits inspired by six festive emotions that are synonymous with the season: joy, indulgence, excitement, generosity, cosiness and calm. So, from homewares to clothing, beauty to stationery, there’s something for everybody without the usual ‘for him’, ‘for her’ nonsense.
This Christmas Trouva is my helpful go-to for design-led decorations, beautiful homewares and stylish stocking fillers from all the amazing independent shops I love to support, and the best bit? If I don’t fancy venturing outside or lugging a ton of shopping home with me, I can shop online, from one site, comfy and cosy at home on my sofa.
Trouvaille: a noun meaning ‘a lucky find’.
