If you’re partial to a wander through the historic streets of central or easterly London, you might have spied a white-fronted shop with large Georgian windows boasting a host of inviting displays. Equal parts paper trove and luxe boutique, Quill is a stationery store like no other. Founded in 2012, the shop has grown into a well-loved purveyor of gorgeous products created by independent designer/makers and studios and a hub of creativity, hosting workshops and events.
Today having made a decisive mark on London’s creative and commercial scenes with workshops and bespoke services, Quill proudly stocks its own goods as well as those made by designers from all over the world. Quill hosts Modern Calligraphy sessions for all levels and its founder Lucy is dedicated to preserving the craft by teaching visitors how to daub beautiful script with colourful inks.
‘We teach modern calligraphy to creatives, brides-to-be and anyone interested in learning a new skill.’ Says Lucy. ‘We’re often hired by companies to visit and run workshops for teams or their clients. We’ve also started hosting guest workshops in collaboration with super talented people, such as Origami Est who runs her origami wall hanging workshop with us, and A Petal Unfolds who teaches the art of stunning paper flower making.’
Touting foil-stamped notebooks and greetings cards on the floor and designing wedding collections and posting orders behind the scenes, Quill caters for its drop-in shoppers, visitors and larger clients alike. Keeping things fresh by changing the shop around on a regular basis and testing luscious inks and nibs, there’s never a dull moment
‘We love bespoke requests because every project is different. One day it might be a set of printed baby announcements for a local family, the next it might be handwritten menus for a supper club, or calligraphy on hand-held mirrors to look like lipstick for a global cosmetics brand. Each project presents it’s own challenges and keeps things interesting.’ Lucy tells me.
Independent bricks and mortar shops are one of the very best things about exploring the streets of London. Every one is unique and houses the expertise of the city’s most creative people, Quill is obviously no exception to this rule. A stone’s throw from Angel station and a slightly more scenic walk from Kings Cross or Farringdon, I highly suggest you drop in for a visit and fill your boots with paper-based goodness.
Open 11am – 6pm Tuesday – Saturday.
